At some point in our life, we all have felt the need to help others, giving it back to the society. Here, In India, the concept of community service among youth is not that popular. It might also be the case that most of us do not know that where and how can we contribute our share to the society. Here is a list of some of the best Non-Profit Organizations of India, where one can either work or volunteer.

• Teach For India

  

Teach for India is a part of the global “Teach For All” network. Its main aim is to reduce the educational inequity existing in India. With TFI, you get a chance to work as full-time teachers at some of the nation’s most under-resourced schools. TFI believes that the two-year commitment is necessary to make an impact.

Their program:

TFI offers a two-year fellowship program to all the selected candidates. You need to first fill in the online application and a test, after that a phone interview and finally, an in-person assessment happens. If selected, the candidate will get a salary of 17,500 rupees/month, and additional allowance if one needs to relocate from their home city.

Who can apply:

Anyone with a graduate degree, good academic proficiency, and organizational skills can apply. Students or professional with a bachelor’s degree at the time of joining can also apply for the program.

• Bhumi

  

Another organization working in empowering education sector. Started in August 2006 by a small group of friends, Bhumi is currently functioning many major cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.

The program:

Bhumi offers part time volunteering opportunities to graduate professional, where one needs to contribute 2 hours every week. Bhumi also offers full-time internships and fellowship opportunities to deserving candidates. The minimum commitment period required for volunteering is about 3 months.

Who can apply:

Anyone with necessary skills and a passion for serving the society can apply. Interns do not get any perks or benefits but they do get a valuable experience and certificate for the program.

• Goonj

  

Goonj works from providing basic needs like clothing and other households to the underprivileged. They have core ground network across 22 states and annually deal with over 3000 tons of materials. Goonj’s aim is to create a parallel economy which is not cash based but trash based.

Their programs:

Working with Goonj is easy and simple. One can set up a Goonj Collection camp in their school, residential area or college, Spread awareness about their idea, contributing your export surplus inventory to Goonj or starting friends of Goonj chapter in their city. Apart from these, there are also full-time internship opportunities available in Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Jammu office.

Who can apply:

Anyone who is exploring to work towards the betterment of society can apply. The selection process includes 3 subjective questions followed by an interview(Skype/in-person). Work from home option is not available and no stipend is paid for the internship.

• C.R.Y (Child Rights and You)

C.R.Y. works towards protecting and honoring rights of underprivileged children. Their work includes preventing child labor, enrolling kids into schools, immunization of kids below the age of 1 etc. Till date, they have impacted lives of almost 6.5 lacs children.

Their programs:

There are several programs offered by C.R.Y. which includes volunteering, internships, research and media fellowships, virtual internships etc. One can even choose to work locally and join their Public Action Groups functioning in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Who can apply:

C.R.Y. offers internship opportunities to candidates above the age of 18, currently enrolled in a college or recent graduates.

• Waste Warriors

  

Waste warriors is an NGO working towards making the globe a cleaner and better place. Started by Jodie Underhill and officially launched in 2011-12, this NGO functions in Dharamshala, Corbett, and Dehradun. They even conducted beach clean-ups in Goa.

Their programs:

Waste Warriors organizes weekly clean-up hikes in Dharamsala and Dehradun. So, if you are around those places or just going there for traveling, you can definitely spare a day and join them. Apart from that, they offer full-time internships for a minimum duration of one month in Dehradun, Dharamshala, and Corbett. They even organize educational programs and children’s day activities.

Who can join:

Anyone willing to commit for at least a month on a full-time basis can apply for the internships. Other volunteering programs are open for all. No stipend is offered.
